2018: What Happened So Far

We are halfway through the year and we’ve already had an eventful year. It feels like it was just yesterday we were ushering in the new year. We had hopes and dreams that 2018 would be better than the previous year. We had New Year’s resolutions that were supposed to transform ourselves for the better. Yet here we are, halfway through the year, and we’re all pretty much the same.

We may have changed differently than how we expected. We set forth goals at the beginning of the year, but plans might have changed. We may have thought we’d go to the gym more, do more acts of kindness, and eat a few more salads. If we’re being honest we probably went to the nearest In-N-Out Burger the third week of January. Work, school, or drama dragged us into projects. We struggled, but we made it this far. We’ve grown in ways we didn’t think possible.

As a society we’ve witnessed horrible incident happening to innocent people. On February 14th, as nation we suffered an unspeakable act against humanity. The Parkland shooting in Florida reminded us that we have a long road ahead when it comes to protecting each other on our home turf. As a result we’ve experienced a giant movement in our educational system.

The education in our nation has been under fire. Unfortunately, it seemed to take a tragedy to ignite a fire to ask for a better system from our government. School protests popped up all over the country asking the government to do something to help protect students. Thousands protested about the gun violence. From asking for protection, the protests turned into just asking for more for our education. Teachers began walking out for pay raises and more school funding. States like Arizona, Oklahoma, and Vermont had massive teacher protests.

From tragedies to protests to walk-outs, we’ve experienced a lot this first half of the year. We even survived President Trump coming to visit Tennessee. This first half of the year we’ve also seen some good, like the Winter Olympics and the Korean War coming to an end. They say it’s never too late to chase your dreams and goals. It’s not too late for us to turn this year around. Get back to eating salads and starting thinking positive thoughts. This can still be your year to shine.

Tennessee Liquor Laws That We Take For Granted

If you have been born and raised in Tennessee, and you’re 21 years of age, you know that getting ahold of alcohol is fairly simple. You don’t have to worry about what time it is, or what day it is. You can even get it at your local grocery store. These are little things about Tennessee Liquor laws that we take for granted.

The rest of the states don’t have the same laws as Tennessee, especially when it comes to alcohol sales. States like Oklahoma have stricter sales of liquor. There, you can’t buy liquor from a grocery store or on Sundays. Beer that is sold at grocery stores has a lower percentage of alcohol. Liquor stores can sell beer, but it can’t be sold cold. Lastly, all liquor stores must close by 9 p.m. every day. The only exception to this is Sundays because all liquor stores must be closed that day. Oklahoma isn’t the only state with strict liquor laws like this.

States like Texas, Kentucky, and a majority of the southern states still have dry counties, meaning that in certain counties it is illegal to sell or buy liquor. This may be shocking to some to find out that there are still limits on alcohol, but it shouldn’t be. Most states still allow counties or districts to decide whether or not they want to allow the sale of alcohol. Only a few states, like Arizona, and Hawaii, do not allow local districts or counties to decide on alcohol laws.

Tennessee tends be very free from restrictions when it comes to alcohol sales. According to the Tennessee’s Department of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) there are a few laws that we need to be aware of.

Minors, under the age of 21, cannot be bartenders. Being under 21 limits what you can do in a lot of areas, but especially when it comes to drinking. Even though being a bartender doesn’t require you to drink alcohol, you’re classified as too young to recognize drunken behaviors. A bartender is responsible for everyone that they serve alcohol to, including the patrons in the restaurant that you don’t directly serve mixed drinks to. Even though the server is delivering the drinks to restaurant patrons, the bartender is ultimately responsible for them.

Selling alcohol to a minor or a known alcoholic is illegal. Selling alcohol to a minor can land you in serious trouble. That is why it is always wise to check for proper identification. Not only is it illegal to sell to minors, for obvious reasons, it’s also illegal to sell to drunks. If a person is heavily intoxicated and is trying to buy alcohol, no one should sell him any. If anything, vendor should take the intoxicated person’s keys away and/or call the police. The same goes for alcoholics in Tennessee.

The reason why Tennessee has so many laws in regards to alcohol is to keep the general populace safe.

Without laws in place, public intoxication, drunk driving accidents, and many other unfavorable things would increase in popularity. With leniency comes responsibility. So drink responsibly and be glad you can find your favorite six pack of beer on a Sunday night.

Graduating High School Just Got Easier

Everybody wants to graduate. Kids want to graduate from high school. Young adults want to graduate from college. Adults want to graduate from grad school. Even parents want their kids to graduate. Everyone wants to graduate something, and there is one thing that we all can graduate from, and that is high school. If you’re a parent of a kid who is currently in high school, or if you’re a high school dropout, don’t give up hope on graduation.

Having kids in high school can be a daunting task. You have to watch them grow up and make their own decisions. This can be frustrating when they decide to blow off doing homework and other school projects. Luckily, being the parent of the family gives you the authority to encourage them to do their work, or else. It’s one of the perks of being a parent after all. Even if they do complete their work, you may still worry if they’ll ever graduate high school.

There are several steps high school students have to complete in order to graduate in the state of Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Education (CDE) set forth the standard that is required of students in order to graduate. Unfortunately, one of those requirements includes math. For starters, all high school students have to complete Algebra I or a course equivalent to that in order to graduate. Math is a touchy subject for a lot of people, and it can intimidate a lot of them into not passing the class.

Something that is exciting, is the fact that Tennessee high school students are no longer required to take the exit exam. The CASHEE or the Tennessee High School Exit Examination, was eliminated in 2015. The CASHEE was a long series of tests given to students, similar to the standardized tests given near the end of every school year. However, unlike the standardized tests, the CASHEE determined if a student could graduate or not.

The state of Tennessee wants people to get an education. According to US News, Tennessee currently ranks 26th amongst the states, which is why the state is making a push to improve its education.
