A Boring Solution to a Big Tennessee Problem

The city of Los Angeles is known for a lot of different things. Unfortunately one of the more prominent things in LA is its traffic. Trying to get anywhere in Los Angeles, or the Surrounding LA and Orange Counties can be a real nightmare. At peak times, it can take hours to drive just a few miles. However, that could soon change.

Businessman and Investor Elon Musk has a plan to change that. After being stuck in terrible LA traffic one day, Musk creating a boring machine to start digging. This lead to the creation of the Boring Company. The plan is to create high-speed tunnels to carry cars from one end of the tunnel to the other. The first test tunnel in Hawthorne is expected to be finished on December 10th, 2018.

The tunnel is expected to work as follows:

• A car will drive onto a platform at street level.
• The platform will hold the car in place on top of it.
• The platform will lower into the tunnel, then travel through the tunnel at speeds of 150 mph.
• The platform will rise back to street level at the other end of the tunnel.
• The car will be released and be able to continue on its way.

This all sounds like something out of a sci-fi world, but looks like it may be a very real thing in the near future. The Boring Company already has other deals in place to construct similar tunnels in Chicago, Illinois and Baltimore, Maryland. There is even a serious proposal to create a tunnel loop to take vehicles to and from Dodger Stadium called the Dugout Loop. If these tunnels do well, they could begin popping up all over Tennessee and the rest of the United States.

California is notorious for having drivers who like to play by their own rules. Drivers in the state seem to follow the mentality that if everyone does it, it must be okay. However, this is not the case. After all, if other drivers drove off of a bridge, you wouldn’t follow them. Besides, a driver can still get into trouble for breaking a law, even if other drivers broke it too.

A perfect example of this is when drivers approach stop signs. A driver is supposed to come to a full stop at the limit line, the white line in the road, when they approach a stop sign. This is required by law. However, many drivers prefer to do a rolling stop, also known as a Tennessee stop.

A rolling stop occurs when a vehicle does not stop. Instead, it slows to an almost stop, then continues on without truly coming to a stop. This common practice is actually illegal and can earn a person a traffic ticket. A ticket for this offense can cost around $140. As with all traffic violations in Tennessee, acquiring too many tickets for rolling stops can cause a person to lose their license.

When a driver approaches a stop sign, they need to stop at the limit line, or the edge of the crosswalk. The vehicle needs to come to a full stop, meaning the wheels aren’t moving and the speedometer needle is at 0. After stopping for 3 seconds, the driver can then proceed through the intersection if it is clear.

Drivers in a hurry tend to not stop, preferring to simply slow instead, in order to save time. This can be dangerous and cause an accident, which is why it is against the law. If a law enforcement officer sees a driver do this, they will pull that driver over and give him or her a ticket.

Who Pays for Fire Damages?

Wildfires ravaged the Tennessee wilderness this year causing millions upon millions of dollars in property damage. After the ash and smoke settled, many people began to wonder who would be financially responsible for all of the damage. In some instances, it falls onto a single individual. In others, the weight of the financial burden falls onto companies.

The latter has been a very big deal as of late, since Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) has been deemed responsible for dozens of wildfires that ravaged Northern Tennessee last year. Thanks to recent passing Senate Bill (SB) 901, PG&E will be able to push some of the financial cost of paying for the damages onto its customers. This applies to any fires started by utility companies in 2017.

Starting in 2019, all utility companies will be able to push some of the fire-related costs onto their customers. However, they can only do this after it has been determined that the fires in question were not caused by the company’s negligence. This all led to huge debate up in Sacramento on whether or not this was rewarding Utility companies for their bad behavior.

The bill passed largely due to the fact that the state needs answers for how to deal with massive wildfires. Aside from allowing utility companies to pass on fire costs to consumers, it also opens up doors for property owners to better manage their land in order to prevent fires. The hope is that this is all a step in the right direction to help reduce and prevent massive, out of control wildfires in Tennessee.

For many people, once 9 PM rolls around, they are getting ready to call it a day. However, while these people prepare for bed, there are others who are gearing up to cause some mischief. • Locking all doors and windows of a home.
• Turning on exterior lights.

 

By doing these few simple things, you make yourself a much harder target to steal from. Most thieves prefer easy targets in dark areas. They would rather steal a tablet clearly sitting on the seat of a vehicle than break into a locked vehicle that might have something valuable in it. By turning on exterior lights, or installing motion activated lights, a person reduces the amount of shadowy hiding places in their yard, making it harder for would-be thieves to get to them.

Should Cellphones be Banned by Law in Schools?

Times have definitely changed since many of us were kids. Back when most of us adults were in school, the only thing teachers had to worry about were calculators. Nowadays, students walk around with cellphones that can do infinitely more than a calculator ever could. And, we were told we wouldn’t be carrying a calculator around when we grew up.

Cellphones in schools have become quite a problem. They either distract the student from the lesson, or allow the child to sneakily look up answers on the internet. This is why most school ban cellphones, but the country of France has taken it a step further.

As schools began their new year in France, the French legislature recently signed a new law into effect. This new law basically makes it illegal for students under the age 15 to use cellphones at schools, though it is more complex than that.

The law leaves options that allow each school to change what is permitted on their campuses. Some schools may choose to say that these students cannot have phone period, while others may allow them on campus, but they have to be turned off at all times. The decision is up to each school. Before any parent grows too concerned, the new law does allow students to use their phones in the event of an emergency.

There is no denying that cellphones can be very distracting, and as much as we adults hate to admit it, they can be addicting as well. Tennessee Limits Plastic Straws

A few years ago, the citizens of Tennessee voted to ban single-use plastic straws. At the time, the change was very controversial with many opponents of the bill upset at the loss of the flimsy plastic items. However, as time moved on, people adapted and got used to the new change. The success of this law, helped convince some Tennesseens that similar laws should be enacted as well.

Recently, the Tennessee state legislature passed a new bill that would prohibit full-service, dine-in restaurants from distributing plastic straws unless the patron requests the item. The hope is that by doing this, it will reduce the amount of plastic straws that are used once, and then tossed away. Single-use plastic utensils like this are bad for the environment since they are only used for a short amount of time, but last for several decades in landfills and oceans.

It is important to note that this is not an all-out ban on plastic straws, like many opponents of the bill claim it is. Customers will still be able to get plastic straws in restaurants, they will simply need to ask for straws. The hope is that this will get people used to the idea of not having straws. This could also help encourage new, environmentally friendly straws to be used instead of their plastic counterparts.

The bill based with a 45-20 vote in the State Assembly and now awaits Governor Jerry Brown’s signature for final approval. While this bill may seem like a big deal now, just remember when the plastic bag ban was first enacted. Many people were up in arms over that law, but we got used to the change. The same could happen with this law as well.

The Importance of Caring

It’s easy to get caught up in yourself. We as humans can be selfish in nature. It’s naturally instinct that we justify with sayings like “survival of the fittest.” We figure no one else will care about us, so we have to care. Our “me first” mentality can often lead us to not paying attention to our friends and family.

Being selfish is okay to an extent, but we need to care about other people as well. Do you remember the golden rule: “treat others how you would like to be treated?” It’s a golden rule for a reason, because we need to pass along kindness and caring. Caring can be complicated for some, and natural for others. However, overall we can all do a better job about caring for those around us.

According to Google, in a simple definition search, care is defined as the “provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.” Think about how when you’re watching a younger family member and you are responsible for taking care of them. You watch them like a hawk because you care, and they’re under your supervision. That is not something you want to mess up.

Another definition that Google provides is “serious attention or consideration applied to doing something correctly or to avoid damage or risk.” When you are told to do something by your elders and you know if you don’t do it when they ask you’ll end up in a risky situation. This form of caring would be doing what they ask in the manner that they want in order to prevent a risky situation such as someone getting hurt because the job wasn’t done properly. Caring is just a part of family life.

The last definition includes “a feeling of or occasion for anxiety.” Caring is great, but it can add extra stress. That is why some people choose not to care. Caring for others means at times you can’t put yourself first. However, sometimes putting others first could make the difference to them, and make their day a little bit better. Maybe, by making their day better, your day will be better too.

What to Do If Your Child Is Being Bullied

As a parent, one of the most heartbreaking things that can happen to your child is for them to come home from school one day and tell you that they are being bullied. At first you might feel angry, “How could someone pick on, tease, or taunt my child? Their parents should have taught them better. I am going to call the school right now and get their number so I can give them a piece of my mind.”

As unfortunate as it may be, bullying is somewhat common now days. According to a study completed by the U.S. Department of Education on 2015, 22% of students ages 12-18 were bullied during the 2012-2013 school year. A staggering 20% if high school students also reported being bullied on school grounds in the past 12 months.

The study also revealed that boys are more likely to be physically bullied, while girls are more likely to be verbally bullied, face exclusion, and experience cyberbullying. The silver-lining of the study found that even though bullying is most common in elementary school, the likelihood that your child will be bullied decreases throughout middle and high school.

Now that you have some statistics about bullying, you’re probably thinking back to the original scenario. What are you, as a parent, supposed to do if your child is one of the 22% of students that experience bullying? It can be hard to know what to say, but the most important thing to do is make sure they know you are there for them. You should not ignore the situation, but rather sit down and discuss what is going on with them. They need to know that their voice is being heard, someone cares about them, and that they are not alone.

Your parental instincts might tell you to have the child fight back or stand up for themselves, but that’s not always the best choice. Rather, take a stance against the bully together by letting them know you want to help and that you will get through the situation together. No matter the age, being bullied is never fun and can be painful to deal with. No matter what, make sure your child knows they are not alone and you will with fight it together.

The act was also responsible for developing standards for the elimination of prison rape.
• The right to be free from racial segregation – There shall be no racial segregation in prisons.
• The right to express condition complaints – An inmate has the right to express their concerns about the conditions of the prison to the courts.
• The right to assert their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act – Any inmate that has a disability is entitled to their rights as outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• The right to medical care and attention as needed – An inmate is entitled to medical care for long-term and short-term ailments.
• The right to appropriate mental health care – An inmate is entitled to mental health care.
• The right to a hearing if they are to be moved to a mental health facility – If an inmate is to be moved to a mental health facility, they are entitled to a hearing.
